And that was because....I made friends!! After doing some research into Facebook networking groups and pages I found a few with recent posts of people doing this this weekend!! I met Jenny and Caitlin, both from California in nearby towns, now nanny neighbors in Waimauku (but did not know each other before coming over!) in Auckland last night to see what the nightlife was like! We ended up having a great night and making some other friends as well! They were staying at Nomad Hostel because in the morning were headed off to Coromandel in the monring, so instead of taking the last 1am ferry (which proved to be WAY too early) back across to Devonport, and then having to get a taxi home from there, I just stayed in the hostel with them and took the 8:10 ferry back over....or so I thought....something was a little funny with the scheduling, the ferry was supposed to leave at 8:10 for Bayswater. Sometimes it's hard to tell which ferry is going where if the departure times are close because they either forget to change the sign, or do it at the last minute and they could leave from either gates 1a, 1b, or 1c. Being very near to 8:10, I assumed the first ferry to arrive was going to be the bayswater one (let me just say in my experience they leave right on time if not EARLY), and with everyone else waiting I went aboard. When the clock when past departure time I started to wonder if maybe I was headed to Devonport, but there wasn't another ferry option, then one quickly came in from beside us, must have only had a couple people to drove off, and no one waiting to pick up before it shot back off again (headed to Bayswater I would later see as we veered in the other direction across the bay). So I ended up taking the Devonport ferry after all, but as it was a more reasonable time of the morning, I was able to call for a lift home fortunately and Julia came to get me. She said once when they were meeting halfway to pick up one of the kids from Nan she got on the wrong ferry with the kids! So apparently it's not hard to do.
Also when I called this morning Reuben sounded very confused! He couldn't understand how it was me on the phone. Apparently they weren't sure if I had come home last night or not, or just assumed that I had, so they were trying to keep the kids a bit quieter in the morning so that I could sleep. Julia got on the phone and it took her a minute to realize "Oh! You're not here!"
In the end, the whole adventure was worth it! I now have a few social connections and hopefully future traveling buddies as well. I was going attach pictures of the sky tower lit up pink in the night sky for Breast Cancer Awareness and my new friends, and a video of Smudge coming through my window, but unfortunately my camera is not cooperating and won't let me take anything off of it! So hopefully sometime in the near future it will work!
